How do I add an image in an assessment question?
You can add an image to an assessment question in either of the following ways:
- Attach the image to the question text.
- Embed the image in the question or answer text using the Rich-Text Editor.
This article summarizes the steps needed to add images, with links to articles providing more detailed steps.
Note: Descriptive text alternatives should be added to images used in assessments, especially if students need to be able to interpret the images to answer the questions. For more information about adding text alternatives, see How can I make images more accessible?
While creating or editing assessment questions, you can add attachments. For more information about adding attachments to assessment questions, see How do I add a new question (with the assessment builder)?
Go to the Resources tool and add a folder with the setting Hide this folder but allow access to its contents. For steps to add this setting to a folder, see How do I hide Resources files and folders?
Tip: For added security on your image folder, you may also follow the steps to set availability dates/times on the folder to the same dates as your assessment, such that the folder will have the following settings:
- Hide this folder but allow access to its contents
- From: [Enter the same date as the available date for your assessment.]
- Until: [Enter the same date as the latest submission date (either the due date, or the late submission date, if late submissions are allowed) for your assessment, unless you also want to release feedback and show the images in the feedback.]
For steps to set assessment availability dates, see How do I inspect and adjust the settings of an assessment?
Upload the image to the hidden folder, making sure that the image itself is visible. For steps to upload files, see How do I upload files to Resources or File Drop?
While authoring or editing a question, use the Rich-Text Editor to embed the image in your question or answer text, and include appropriate alternative text for the image. For steps to create assessment questions, embed images using the editor, and make images accessible, see:
IMPORTANT: The assessment Preview option does not provide an exact view from a student perspective. For example, instructors will still be able to see images embedded in questions while students may not be able to see them.
Image visibility is managed in the Resources tool of the site in which they are stored (which could be a different site). To ensure that students can view images embedded in questions, check that the following permissions are NOT set on affected folders or files in Resources:
- Hide this folder and its contents (setting on the folder)
- Hide this item (setting on an individual image file)
Additionally, if your images are stored in a different UVACollab site than your course site, for example, in your Home site, follow the steps to make the folder viewable by all logged-in users.
Tip: If this is your first time using embedded images in a test or quiz, we recommend emailing UVACollab Support with the title of your site and assessment, and we can spot-check a few of your images to see if their permissions are configured correctly.
